when i heard the news this morning i could not withhold a big smile: americas nightmare of the sixties,the domino theory (latin america controlled by left-wing governments - elected ones!) seems to become 40 years later reality. after brazil, venezuela and bolivia we get ms. bachelet now, daughter of an army general, that dictator pinochets death squats killed some 20 years ago.
but times have changed and the american agenda is not focusing on their backyard anymore. no more bay of pigs, no cia-money for chiles newspapers and military-bastards, no assassination of left wing leaders these days. bolivias president could even get away with his plans to legalize his countrys finest and americas most imported product.
it seems as if left and right ended the day the sovjiet union gave up. and after 10 years of xtc-fuelled happiness, dot.com boom and some blow jobs under the radar of pennsylvania ave. 1600 the great nation under bushs controll has decided that political theories were never as powerfull as religions anyway.
so instead of punishing some left over romantic lefties as we did back in the good old days, the agenda has shifted to opening up the biggest pandoras box out there - a new religious war, the crusades for the 21st century.
meanwhile ms. bachelet has a real chance of giving chiles current wirtschaftswunder a social face - and help chile become once again a symbol of consolidation to the other countries of south america. good luck!
